Optimal pollination for new apple varieties
A key requirement for producing high-quality apples is effective flower pollination. Apples largely depend on cross-pollination. To identify suitable variety combinations, controlled crosses are carried out. Based on data collected since 2002 at the Laimburg Research Centre within the working group on variety and rootstock testing for apple and pear, as part of the European EUFRIN network (European Fruit Research Institutes Network), continuous information on suitable pollen donors for new apple varieties is being generated.
