How much does the bark of young trees heat up?

Winter temperatures affect fruit trees in different ways. Weather stations generally measure air temperature, but the temperature of plant tissues can differ significantly from that of the surrounding air. Strong temperature fluctuations in bark tissue are considered a possible cause of bark damage.

In apple trees, such damage frequently occurs during winter and can lead in spring to delayed bud break, general weakening of the trees or even complete loss. However, until now there has been little concrete data on the actual temperature patterns in apple tree bark.
